Bees developed over millions of years and it is thought that the honeybee developed in South East Asia. There are four distinct species of honeybees in the world:- Apis Dorsata The Giant Honeybee. This bee just has one comb built on a single branch of a tree. Apis Florea The Little Honeybee. I experienced a colony of these in Saudi Arabia when a colony established itself on a branch outside my balcony. They are non stinging and only produce one large comb. The cells are quite small. When the colony had moved on, I collected the comb and kept it for many years in a tupperware container. Apis Cerana The Eastern Honeybee.
Thought to be a close relative of the western honeybee and have a common ancestor. Builds its home in a void of a tree or cave etc similar to the western honeybee. Apis Mellifera The Western Honeybee.
It is very slightly larger than its cousin the eastern honeybee. As it moved from the Middle East and into Europe it developed into several distinct races, Italian, Caucasian, Black etc. Modern man transported these bees to the USA, Australia and New Zealand where they were not indigenous.
